John Peel CentreHAG contributes to fire safety at Stowmarket’s John Peel Centre

Named after the iconic Liverpudlian Radio 1 DJ who lived much of his life in Suffolk, the new John Peel Centre for Creative Arts (JPCCA) fittingly hosts an eclectic mix of art and music for the local community in Suffolk.  The building is a conversion of the old Corn Exchange at the heart of Stowmarket’s historic town centre.

HAG is delighted that one of its high performance fire protection shutters has been deployed for the project. The product used is a 2000mm wide FT01 Fireguard fire shutter over the reception counter.  One of the reasons for the product being chosen was its compact design that allowed the open shutter to be housed in a box of only 250 mm in height. The FT01’s audio-visual control panel is linked to the buildings integrated fire protection system and will shut quickly in the event of a fire.  It features battery back up to allow automatic self-closure in the event of a power failure.  It is rated to provide a fire protection barrier for one hour.

This up-rated fire system was installed as Phase 3 of the building’s re-development to add a mezzanine floor to provide practice and workshop areas a café bar.  Interestingly, the design was developed through a Student Design Ideas competition in association with East of England RIBA and the Suffolk Association of Architects.  The competition was won by 20 year old second year architecture student Matthew Loosely.  Matthew is studying at the University of Huddersfield, however fittingly comes from Stowupland, which is situated just outside of Stowmarket.  The judges explaining that his proposal “really caught our imagination”.   To find out more about what caught the judges’ imagination, please view this excellent video fly-through showing the 3D CAD drawings of the mezzanine floor and wider exhibition, cafe and performance space.
