2015 legislation requirements when specifying a smoke curtain

All non-domestic premises are required under UK law to make sure that they operate in a fire safe manner. This not only includes occupants carrying out annual fire drills and risk assessments, but also ensuring that the building has installed appropriate fire safety equipment.

For contractors and specifiers who are planning on installing fire and smoke curtains in their premises, here is the legislation that you must comply within 2015.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, every commercial premises must ensure that the building and its occupants are suitably protected from fire. This includes carrying out fire risk assessments, planning action to take in an emergency, and making sure that appropriate fire safety equipment is installed and maintained.

Under this law, you must make sure that occupants have a clear exit route so that in event of a fire they can safely exit the building. Installing fire and smoke curtains that have fire integrity of up to 2 hours in areas that may be passed during evacuation can help keep individuals safe from the heat and smoke of a fire.

British Standards

All fire doors and curtains must meet British and European Standards that prove their efficiency and show that they are safe for use. HAG’s Fireguard Smoke Curtain SC120 is tested to BS EN 1634-1:2008 and have a fire integrity of up to 2 hours as well as a gravity fail safe to comply with recent legislation.

Gravity Fail Safe

Recent British Standards introduced in 2014 mean that all fire and smoke curtains must have a gravity fail-safe. This will mean that the curtain will still deploy even if there is a mains power failure and the backup battery has been depleted. A curtain like our Fireguard Smoke Curtain HS120 will descend at a steady rate should an alarm sound even if there has been a power failure.
