In December 2013, HAG was awarded a contract with Avon and Somerset Police to provide and install roller shutter doors to their new police operations centres in various locations in Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire. HAG has been working with Avon and Somerset Police and Blue Light Partnership for just over 6 months and have been tasked with project managing the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke industrial roller shutters and insulated doors throughout the purpose-built properties.
The £78 million ‘Building for the Future’ PFI project sees the construction of four operations centres in Ashmead Road in Keynsham, Gloucester Road in Bristol, Express Park in Bridgewater and a training centre in Black Rock Quarry near Portishead. Plans for the operations centres were approved in 2010, with stipulations requiring subcontract work to be awarded to local suppliers and employment and apprentice opportunities to be created.
With construction starting in 2012, the project also required further engagement with local communities and therefore offered learning opportunities for local schools and colleges which took part in the offender rehabilitation programme.
The Accommodation Programme aims to help with the delivery of a police service that will meet the current and future needs of local communities. The large premises with increased custodial capacity will help improve the efficiency of processing offenders, which combined with the investigative space will allow police officers to spend more time in the communities where they are needed. The Black Rock Quarry training centre will allow for better training of police officers as it will contain indoor firing ranges, offices and training facilities.
By placing each police operations centre in accessible locations, they aim to reduce response and travelling times; ensure that buildings are used in the most effective way through improving and consolidating their estate and reducing the service’s carbon footprint. To help conserve energy, part of the work HAG were required to carry out involved the installation of insulated Armourguard F1 roller shutter doors to the Ancillary Building in Bridgewater’s Express Park.
In order to construct premises that provide for the local communities and functions as a secure custody centre, Avon and Somerset Police required an installation of quality, durable doors that were able to withstand frequent use. HAG was therefore subcontracted to provide and manage the installation of a number of roller shutters for multiple purposes within each premises. All of the doors HAG provided were modified to include cabling and connection of the ancillary equipment to help with security, including lockable/push button stations, flashing beacons/sirens, and wireless safety devices.
At three of the locations, HAG was required to supply and install variations of the Armourguard C1 /Armourguard P2 perforated, non-insulated roller shutter doors to the exterior of the custody area’s van dock. As the custody areas need to be highly secure, Avon and Somerset Police required resistant doors that could withstand frequent use. The roller shutters that have been installed have curtains manufactured from galvanised steel strips formed in 75mm deep scrolled interlocking laths and were installed with electrical operating systems so as to meet the security and access needs of the premises.
The roller shutter doors installed in the van docks are electrically operated using a 415 volt three phase system with integral limits switches, motor brake and an emergency manual chain override facility should the doors need to be operated without electrical power. All of the doors HAG installed have been modified so that they are interlinked with traffic light entry/exit systems and are controlled from the premises’ Charge Desk so as not to compromise security.
