July 2019 marked the first anniversary of the opening of HSBC UK’s head office, One Centenary Square, in Birmingham. This state-of-the-art ten-storey building represents a £200m investment in the West Midlands and a renewal of HSBC UK’s historic links to the city: the first branch of the Birmingham and Midland Bank opened here in 1836. HAG were enlisted to help in the conversion of a 10 storey building into HSBC’s new head office.
The Project:
HAG was given a brief to provide fire curtains to all basement access and egress points and refuse stores. The office block windows on higher levels of the building needed fire curtains too, to protect the neighbouring buildings in the city centre location, occupied by the Alpha Tower and Crowne Plaza Hotel. Additionally, HAG was asked to provide fire shutters to the atrium staircase to prevent fire spread from the offices to the atrium.
Working at such heights can be a challenging work environment, 10 storeys high over the 1.5m sq ft plot. However, HAG rose to the challenge, ensuring optimum safety at all times. The materials for the project needed supplying in advance of installation due to the delivery and positioning within the building’s shell, which meant we were fully prepared when the time came to install the fire shutters and curtains.
HAG’s part in the move was finished within the deadline and to project brief. HSBC UK’s new head office is the first building in Birmingham to be constructed to the standards of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold accreditation, made up of 25% recycled materials. As one of the greenest buildings in Birmingham, their new head office will now better reflect their renowned brand with high levels of fire safety from HAG.
