OVERVIEW

HAG Ltd. was appointed to design, manufacture, and install a bespoke smoke-control solution for The Rodillian Academy, part of the Rodillian Multi Academy Trust in Wakefield. The project required a large-span smoke barrier capable of protecting escape routes in an open-plan internal space while preserving the architectural intent.

To meet these requirements, HAG supplied and installed a single 33-metre-wide HS120 Smoke Curtain, a high-performance, CERTIFIRE-approved product compliant with BS EN 12101-1. The curtain remains fully concealed during normal operation and deploys automatically via the building’s fire alarm or BMS in the event of fire.

Engineered as part of the building’s passive fire strategy, the HS120 system maintains smoke compartmentation, supporting safe evacuation of students and staff while allowing uninterrupted sightlines and open-plan architecture.

PARTNERSHIP

The Rodillian Multi Academy Trust required a specialist provider capable of delivering a non-standard, extra-wide smoke curtain without intermediate supports, and with assurance of both product performance and installation competence. HAG was selected based on:

• Expertise in large-span smoke and fire control systems for complex educational and public buildings.
• Proven track record in delivering bespoke-width smoke curtains integrated seamlessly into existing building fabric and management systems.
• In-house engineering capability to ensure structural stability, long-span deployment, and compliance with relevant British Standards.

THE PROJECT

HAG designed and installed the HS120 Smoke Curtain, a robust, gravity fail-safe vertical deployment system engineered for long-span applications.

Technical Scope

Product Certification:

• CERTIFIRE-approved, tested and certified to BS EN 12101-1, supporting compliance with BS 9999 and Approved Document B smoke-control requirements.

Curtain Construction:

• Fire-resistant glass-fibre reinforced fabric with silicone coating for enhanced heat resistance and dimensional stability.
• Manufactured and delivered as a single 33m continuous barrier, eliminating the need for intermediate supports or posts.

Operation:

• Gravity fail-safe mechanism ensures reliable deployment even in mains power failure.
• Full integration with the school’s Fire Alarm System and Building Management System, including battery back-up for resilient operation.

Installation & Integration:

• Concealed housing preserves sightlines and open-plan layout.
• Installation completed with documented compliance and traceability, in line with industry best practice.

OUTCOME

The HS120 Smoke Curtain now provides reliable, high-performance smoke containment, supporting the building’s compartmentation strategy and protected escape routes. The system combines certified product performance (CERTIFIRE), ensuring architects, surveyors, and the client can rely on both compliance and operational effectiveness.
