Bristol, Banksy & Roller Shutters…

Banksy, the elusive and enigmatic street artist, has deep roots in Bristol, UK. This city, known for its vibrant street art scene, is often considered the birthplace of Banksy’s career. Growing up in Bristol, Banksy was heavily influenced by the city’s underground art and music culture. His distinctive style—combining stenciling techniques with striking and often provocative imagery—first gained widespread attention on the streets of Bristol.

Banksy’s art frequently appears on everyday urban surfaces, including roller shutters. These shutters, common on shopfronts, serve as blank canvases for his thought-provoking pieces. Banksy transforms mundane, functional objects, such as shutters & walls (always with permission) into compelling works of art that engage and challenge passersby. His works on these surfaces often carry social and political messages, making a powerful impact on the community and contributing to the cultural tapestry of Bristol.

In essence, Banksy’s connection to Bristol is not just about his origin; it’s a continuous relationship that sees the city as both his inspiration and his gallery, with roller shutters playing a pivotal role in showcasing his artistic expression.

This street art dates back to the 1990’s, and was created by our cities own legend, Banksy, as one of his very earliest works. Unfortunately, as the shop was changing hands, the new owner started painting over the design, much to the horror of a local Banksy fan who happened to be walking past at that moment!

Please note: This Street Art Competition is not endorsed by Banksy and has no affiliation with him. Bristol is the birthplace of HAG and remains our headquarters. We are proud to support and promote the work of local artists, including Banksy.
