Insight: FIRAS explained

FIRAS Certification Scheme

What is the FIRAS certification scheme and what does it cover?

FIRAS is a voluntary, third-party certification scheme for companies that install both passive fire protection systems, such as HAG Ltd.. It is operated by Warringtonfire and accredited by UKAS to BS EN ISO/IEC 17065:2012. FIRAS promotes good practice through assessment of quality management systems, installation competence, and documented procedures. The scheme covers various modules, including fire-rated coatings, penetration seals, cavity barriers, partition systems, fire doors, ducting, and glazing systems. It aims to provide confidence in the competence of installers and the quality of installation practices in line with required standards.

Who is eligible to apply for FIRAS certification, and what initial criteria must be met?

FIRAS certification is awarded to companies such as HAG Ltd., not individuals, who demonstrate competence in installing fire protection systems. To be eligible, companies must demonstrate relevant installation experience, suitable quality management systems, and appropriate competence within the scope of certification being applied for.

What is the FIRAS certification process?

The FIRAS certification process involves a three-stage assessment. First, the company’s office-based management systems are assessed. Second, our workmanship on-site for all trade disciplines for which certification is sought was assessed. Lastly, the competence of our supervisory and installation employees was evaluated. Certification is awarded where all assessment criteria are satisfied. Upon certification, we then register all of our contracts on the FIRAS Maintenance Suite, enabling ongoing surveillance audits, including random site inspections.

What modules are covered under FIRAS certification?

FIRAS offers certification for various fire protection installations, including: fire-rated reactive coatings to structural steelwork (intumescent paint), fire-rated sprayed cement or gypsum type coatings, fire-rated board encasement to structural steelwork, fire-rated penetration seals and linear gap sealing, fire-rated cavity barriers, fire-resisting partition systems (dry lined, steel faced, and composite), fire-resisting timber, metallic, and composite doors/doorsets, fire resisting roller shutters, fire-resisting ducting systems and ancillary items, fire-resisting glazing screen systems, and fire door maintenance.

How does FIRAS ensure ongoing compliance for certified companies?

After initial certification, FIRAS member companies must register all contracts/projects on the FIRAS Maintenance Suite. FIRAS undertakes surveillance audits by randomly selecting registered projects from the FIRAS Maintenance Suite. These audits are a snapshot in time, not a comprehensive inspection of all work, and companies are still responsible for maintaining the required standards at all times. A number of inspections are conducted annually across certified companies.

What are the benefits of using a FIRAS certified installer?

Using a FIRAS-certified installer, such as HAG Ltd., provides confidence that installation work is carried out by competent installers working to recognised standards and specification requirements We undergo rigorous assessments to demonstrate our competence, and are regularly audited to ensure we maintain standards in line with industry guidelines.

Is it possible to verify a company’s FIRAS certification?

Yes, the FIRAS Maintenance Suite (FIRAS Register/Database) contains the details of companies that are certified installers of fire protection. You can search for certified companies such as HAG Ltd. using the FIRAS register. It is also advisable to check the validity of a certificate using the search tool.

Does FIRAS inspect every project that HAG Ltd. undertakes?

FIRAS does not inspect every project. Instead, it conducts surveillance audits on a sample of registered projects. While FIRAS membership demonstrates the capability of achieving standards, we are ultimately responsible for ensuring our work meets the scheme’s requirements on every project, as the audits are a snapshot in time and a limited review of a project rather than full-time supervision.
