A fire shutter is a slatted steel shutter designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke in a property. It can be integrated with a fire system to shut automatically in the event of a fire. A fire curtain is a flexible glass fibre curtain designed to prevent the spread for smoke and first in a property. It can be integrated with a fire system to shut automatically in the event of a fire. A fire shutter door has a specified fire resistance level (FRL) of 1 – 4 hours according to BS EN 16034:2014.
A fire shutter is constructed from steel and a fire curtain constructed from glass fibre fabric. They both serve the purpose of resisting the spread of fire and smoke inside a property. Both can offer a fire resistance level (FRL) of 1 – 4 hours. Owing to its construction, a fire shutter additionally offers a high level of physical security.
Whilst both are fabric-based products deployed by a fire control system they have different design and characteristics. A fire curtain is designed to prevent the spread of fire whilst a smoke curtain is designed to spread of smoke. Neither provide physical security.
