The HF240 fire curtain rescue window, much like typical fire curtains, are designed to be used in doorways, hoistways, lift shafts, corridors and egress areas where it is important for people in the buildings to be able to have a safe means to escape, and for emergency services to be able to access rooms and areas quickly. They are typically made from a woven fibreglass material that is stored in a box above a doorway or hatch. Once triggered, the curtain descends which slows the spread of the fire and smoke for up to 2 hours.
Fire curtains can replace the more traditional fire doors in some cases, leading to more open corridors and doorways. Once the fire curtains have been installed they should be serviced regularly; this is a legal requirement for all safety products.
The features that set the HF240 fire curtain apart from other fire curtains are the top and bottom translucent windows. These windows allow emergency services coming into the building in the event of a fire to have a high and low level view through the curtain, potentially saving lives in the process. Overcoming the restriction with typical fire curtains, fire safety officers can quickly assess where occupants are in the premises and lead them to safety.
The two windows do not at all compromise the integrity or fire resistance of the curtain. The panels can withstand direct flame at temperatures up to 1065oC for up to 2 hours with no flame penetration. By reaching this level of performance, the curtains surpass the requirements for ASTM E-119 fire endurance and FAR 25 appendix F certification.
The windows in the fire curtains are made from specialised high purity silica fabrics, extremely high purity silicone optical resins and nano-particle silica opacifiers.
1. Audio visual alarms can be attached to the top or side of the fire curtain, and wired into the control panel for the building. This means that when the fire alarm goes off, the beacon will flash and siren will go off to indicate that the fire curtain is descending.
2. A split or delayed drop system is designed to allow a temporary means of escape while still initially containing smoke. The curtain will drop in stages when this system is used.
3. A beam sensor is used in the event of someone crawling under the curtain while the curtain itself is descending. The sensor can be wired to either stop or retract back up into the top casing.
4. If there are people needing to escape past the curtain, there is an override switch. Once pressed the switch will retract the curtain and then descend again when released.
