When are smoke curtains required?

Smoke curtains provide invaluable security against the effects of smoke and fire in commercial premises. As well as the obvious protection of people, they prevent damage to property and provide a means of clear and safe escape. They are often chosen for construction projects and sites where a fire shutter may not be appropriate, especially with the neat box housing allowing for discreet protection.

Smoke curtains can be installed in both small corridors and large open plan spaces, making them suitable for a wide range of properties and premises. For maximum effectiveness, they should be installed in public access areas such as doorways, escape routes and elevator shafts. Whether for a department store, office or airport, smoke curtains should be installed in areas of high footfall and throughout fire exit routes in order to provide an effective smoke barrier and means of safe exit. With unparalleled strength and fire protection, the Fireguard Smoke and Curtain HS120 is often chosen for commercial properties, meeting BS EN 1634-1:2008.

How they work

Smoke curtains can be connected to your existing fire alarm system so that they are automatically deployed on fire alarm bell or, in case of mains power failure, they can be deployed from a backup battery. On release, a smoke curtain will contain the smoke within a small, designated area and can prevent the spread of fire for up to 2 hours. This allows for personnel to find a safe refuge or evacuation route through the building with minimal injury. By containing the smoke and preventing the spread of fire, smoke curtains can also protect your commercial property and stock, keeping any fire damage to a minimum.
