How do roller shutter doors work?

A roller shutter consists of inter-connected horizontal slats (or laths) that form a rigid vertical barrier when the roller shutter in the lowered position. The inter-connections between the slats are flexible allowing the roller shutter to be opened by rolling it onto a drum mounted above the door aperture. One benefit of a roller shutter is that it can be partially lowered to meet requirements.
